As an acupuncturist who has specialized in women’s fertility for the last 15 years, I understand that going through an IVF journey can be emotionally and physically draining. Especially if it’s your first time going through it, you should know that it’s incredibly important to care for both your body and mental well-being during this time. In my experience, that’s why many women choose to try acupuncture treatment during IVF. Research has indicated that acupuncture increases the success rates of IVF treatments.

If you’re new to acupuncture, it’s natural to have questions about what to expect and how to prepare for your first session. In this article, allow me to guide you through everything you need to know about preparing for your initial acupuncture treatment during IVF. How Does Acupuncture Help with IVF

Acupuncture can help with IVF in several ways. It helps to reduce stress and anxiety, which is so important when undergoing fertility treatments. Acupuncture also increases blood flow to the reproductive organs, providing them with essential nutrients and hormones needed for conception. In addition, acupuncture has been found to increase the production of endorphins that can support a healthier emotional state during IVF.

The goal of acupuncture is not only to create a more comfortable physical environment but also an internal balance as well. By balancing Qi (energy) throughout your body via channels known as meridians, acupuncture can assist in creating an optimal environment for conception.

What to Expect When Trying Acupuncture with IVF

If this is your first time trying acupuncture, it’s okay to feel a little nervous about what to expect. During your first acupuncture treatment, I will take my time getting to know you and discussing your medical history with you in detail. This first consultation will help me develop a treatment plan that best suits your needs. We will also discuss any allergies or current medication, so if you’re currently taking medication please come to your appointment with the names and doses readily available.

On top of asking you questions, I will also be able to answer any questions you may have about your treatment and explain the process of acupuncture to you. It’s important to me that you feel heard and respected so that I can better support you in this journey together.

Preparing For Your First Acupuncture Treatment During IVF

My biggest piece of advice would be to rest well before your session, hydrate adequately, and avoid drinking coffee and other stimulants before your appointment. Ideally, you should eat a light meal or snack before your appointment to keep your blood sugar stable. On top of that, wearing comfortable clothing that allows ready access to acupuncture points is recommended. Depending on the treatment, I may also ask you to lie down in different positions, so be sure to wear clothing that doesn’t restrict your movements.

Common Misconceptions About Acupuncture During IVF

Lastly, I want to address some of the common misconceptions I hear from women before they work with me. First, some believe that acupuncture treatments are painful or uncomfortable, but this is not the case. Acupuncture needles are very thin and should not cause any pain or discomfort. Additionally, you may be worried that it could interfere with your medical plan of action or disrupt an IVF cycle, but acupuncture really does enhance fertility treatments in many ways.

I’m so incredibly passionate about this and I would love to discuss your specific situation more. Acupuncture can prove to be a valuable part of your journey as you seek to become pregnant and I would love to support you firsthand.
