What We Wish More People Knew About Egg Quality

Before we dive into the best ways to improve egg quality, I want to take a second and talk about why this is so important. “Egg quality” essentially refers to an egg’s ability to become fertilized and develop into a healthy embryo (which is what all of the patients we work with want!). While factors like age, lifestyle, and health conditions can influence egg quality, there is a lot that’s within your control too! If you’re hoping to get pregnant this year, here are 7 things you can do to improve your egg quality.

1. Regular Acupuncture

You probably knew this one was coming, right? Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points in the body to regulate hormonal balance, improve blood flow to reproductive organs, and reduce stress – all factors that can positively impact egg quality. Regular acupuncture sessions, especially when tailored for fertility enhancement, can be incredibly effective when it comes to improving your egg quality. We are happy to discuss this in more detail when you come in!

2. Eat a Balanced Diet

Next, let’s talk about nutrition. When trying to get pregnant, a diet rich in antioxidants (found in leafy greens, berries, and nuts) can protect eggs from oxidative stress (which in turn increases their quality). Incorporating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon and flaxseeds, can also support cellular health. Additionally, increasing the number of whole foods over processed items can also improve your egg quality.

While eating a balanced diet can greatly improve egg quality, we also want to mention that we are a judgment-free facility. Our goal here is always to support YOU first and provide information second.

3. Manage Stress Effectively

Stress is a known factor that negatively affects fertility. With that said, I don’t want you to start stressing about the amount of stress you have in your life. In my experience, exercises such as yoga, meditation, simply walking more and mindfulness can all be powerful tools in managing stress levels. And if I may be so bold, acupuncture can help with both stress reduction and fertility enhancement, making it a no brainer if you feel like this might be one of the factors affecting your egg quality.

4. Limit Exposure to Environmental Toxins

Reducing exposure to pesticides, plastics (BPA), and chemicals found in some beauty and cleaning products can contribute to better reproductive health. If you can smell your detergents, body creams or household cleaners, then your product may contain chemicals called endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) that can disrupt hormones. These chemicals alter the production, metabolism, and activity of hormones.

Additionally, opting for organic produce and hormone free meats along with using natural products when possible can reduce your toxin load and help improve your egg quality.

5. Consider Supplements

Certain supplements, under the guidance of a healthcare provider, can support egg quality too. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), DHEA, and inositol are some of the main supplements that have been known to improve your egg health. Check with your doctor before adding anything new to your routine.

6. Prioritize Sleep

I know you’ve heard this one before, but adequate sleep is crucial for hormonal balance and overall health. The reality is that poor sleep can disrupt the body’s natural rhythms, affecting hormone production and, consequently, egg quality. My recommendation is, if you are trying to improve your egg quality, aiming for a minimum of 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night is a good place to start.

7. Stay Hydrated

This might be the easiest thing on this list (although I know it’s easier said than done!). As a healthcare practitioner, I want to stress that hydration is essential for all bodily functions, including fertility. Drinking enough glasses of water that keeps your pee a pale yellow every day helps maintain optimal cellular health and supports the body’s natural detoxification processes, which in turn improves your egg quality.
